NEWTON, NJ—A Newton man is in custody charged with a number of car burglaries on the nights of August 28 and 29. Newton Police Department picked up Hasdrede Kengne, 20, around 10:30 a.m. for the thefts, police report.
According to police, the thefts occurred mostly in the area of Madison Street, Halsted Street, Lawnwood Avenue, Spring Street and Main Street. Various items including cash, sunglasses and credit cards were taken.
A subsequent investigation by a number of officers resulted in Kengne being charged with eight counts of burglary, criminal attempt, criminal mischief and four counts of theft of moveable property, police said.
Kengne was released pending an appearance in Sussex County Superior Court on Wednesday, October 3. The majority of the stolen items were recovered and returned to their rightful owners.
The Newton Police Department is reminding residents to remain vigilant, lock their car doors, remove valuable items or keep them out of sight and report any suspicious persons or activity observed.
