NEWTON, NJ— A Newton man is in the Sussex County jail, facing weapons and assault charges. On Sunday, May 13 around 10:14 a.m. Newton Police went to the intersection of Moran Street and Spring Street on the report of a man with a gun, police report.
Police said they saw a man matching the description, Russell Shine, 56, walking into a Spring Street apartment building, according to police.
Shine was found to have a black, spring loaded BB gun that closely resembled a .45 caliber M1911 style handgun that he had put back in his apartment, police say.
Police report witnesses told them Shine had pointed the gun at two people on the second floor porch area of the Spring House.
Shine’s weapon was found and secured by patrols. He was taken into custody and charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, aggravate assault and certain persons not to possess weapons.
Shine was processed and lodged in the Sussex County Jail, where he is currently pending court.
