NEWTON, NJ—A Newton man is facing charges after trying to pass counterfeit money at the 7-Eleven on Water Street. On August 25 around 9:44 p.m. Newton Police Department received a call about a man trying to buy cigarettes with counterfeit money, police said.

By the time police got to the store, the man had left, police said.

Police found Stacy Spencer, 55 of Liberty Street at the intersection of Spring Street and Moran Street, police said.

Spencer was found to have counterfeit bills along with three Xanax pills that were not prescribed to him, police said.

Spencer was charged with forgery and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was processed and released pending a future court appearance in Sussex County Superior Court.
