NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School girls basketball team won a tough game against Morris Catholic on Monday 50-47, but lost when they played Jefferson on Wednesday, 38-28.
Jessie Brannick had 10 points; two 2-pointers and two 3-pointers. Amy Fehr put up seven points, Olivia Buckley scored six and Madeline Gore added five more to the score.
Defensively, Fehr had 15 rebounds throughout the game against Jefferson. Buckley contributed also with six steals. In total Newton had 29 rebounds, 13 steals, and three blocks.
Newton hosted Morris Catholic on Monday in a tough game as the girls battled back and forth to maintain the lead; Newton won by three points.
The teams were evenly matched, both scoring 10 points in the first quarter, Morris Catholic scored 17 in the second, while Newton scored 16.
The Braves came back in the second half to dominate the court, scoring 14 points to Morris Catholic’s eight and then adding another 10 in the fourth to secure the three-point lead.
Gore was the high scorer of the game, contributing 15 points, six of which were 2-points and one was a 3-pointer. She also had seven rebounds. Buckley put up another 10 points and had three steals throughout the game.
Taylor Squiers contributed nine points, three rebounds and three assists, while Fehr and Brannick each put up eight points apiece. Fehr grabbed eight rebounds and Brannick had six assists.
The Newton High School girls basketball team is 6-3 overall and will take on Lenape Valley away on Tuesday, January 14 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
