NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School girls basketball team started the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 2 tournament as the fifth seeded team on Tuesday. Maddie Gore was unstoppable against Hawthorne with 31 points in a 66-46 victory. She had 11 2-pointers, two 3-pointers and three free throws for a total of 31 points.

Olivia Buckley put up 15 points by making thee 2-pointers, two 3-pointers and three foul shots and Amy Fehr put up 10 points through five 2-pointers.

Jessie Brannick contributed seven points, Caroline Fox added another two and Taylor Squiers made one foul shot to add to the victory.

The Newton Braves will play on the road against fourth seed Manchester Regional on Thursday, March 5. The time of the game has not been determined yet.
