NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School Braves Field Hockey team defeated Mountain Lakes 2-1 on Thursday in the Quarterfinal Round of the NJSIAA Group 1, Section 1 tournament.

Newton went into the tournament as the third-seeded team and had a bye in the first round. The Braves took on six-seeded Mountain Lakes in the Quarterfinal round.

Mountain Lakes scored first, but Newton came back to score two goals in the second half to take the win and advance to the semi-final round against second-seeded team Pequannock.

Newton out shot Mountain Lakes 7-3. Abby Berkowitz, Newton’s starting keeper had two saves against Mountain Lakes’ offense.

Julia Fitt and Elissar Abou-Jaoude scored with assists from Julia Decker and Sydney Pavlishin.

Newton is currently 15-3 overall and 14-1 in the NJAC conference. They will play away against Pequannock on Monday, October 28. The time has yet to be determined.
