NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School girls basketball team lost 46-40 when they hosted Sparta on Wednesday.

Sparta came out strong in the first half, taking the lead by 12 points at halftime. Newton tried to come back in the second scoring another 23 points to Sparta’s 17, but could not make up the deficit.

Lead scorer against the Spartans was Maddie Gore, who put up five 2-pointers and four foul shots for a total of 14 points. Taylor Squiers contributed nine points and Olivia Buckley added another eight points.

Jessie Brannick, Amy Fehr and Caroline Fox added to the total. Gore had seven rebounds and one assist, while Brannick, Fehr, and Fox each had four .

The Newton High School girls basketball team moved their overall record to 10-6 and their NJAC division record to 8-4.
