NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School girls basketball team ended their season when they lost to top-seeded Westwood 43-38 on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 2 tournament.
The Braves came out strong, scoring 11 points in the first quarter to Westwood’s nine and then ties the top-seed with seven points each in the second before heading into halftime.
Newton stayed tough, but was unable to take the win as Westwood scored 14 points to Newton’s 12 in the third and then added another 13 to Newton’s nine to take the victory.
Maddie Gore led the Braves as their top scorer against Westwood, contributing 14 with six rebounds. Jade Luciani contributed seven points and had four rebounds. Kaitlyn Lynch had six points with three rebounds.
Jessie Brannick and Amy Fehr each contributed four points. Davisann Boyd put in two points, and Madison Leonardo had one.
The Newton High School girls basketball team ended their 2018-2019 season with an overall record of 24-5 and placed first in the conference with a 10-0 record.
