NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School wrestling teams competed in tournaments over the holiday break, winning big in both.

The boys team finished seventh with 97 points after they competed in the Battle at the Bay tournament in Bayonne on Saturday, December 21.

  • 120 pounds: Third place match: Nathan Fit (Newton) won over Dylan Kelleher (Long Branch) (TF-1.5. 5:49)
  • 126 pounds: Third place match: Tim Greff (Pequannock) won over Danny Cleary (Newton) with a 13-11 decision.
  • 138 pounds: First place match: JoJo Lotruglio (Newton) pinned Lucas Steenstra (Butler) in 2:37
  • 145 pounds: Fifth place match: Nick Costa (Newton) won over Grant Heller (Middletown North) (DFF)
  • 182 pounds: Third Place match: Julian Sibblies (Newton) pinned Andrew Conklin (Long Branch) at :23.
  • 220 pounds: Fifth place match: Jabari Oxley (Newton) won over Brandon Mora (New Providence) (DFF)
  • 285 pounds: Fifth Place Match: Federico Reyes (Butler) won over Isaiah Wilkins (Newton) (DFF)

Newton’s female wrestlers competed in their own tournament on Thursday away at Bloomfield High School and placed in the following weight classes.

  • 100 pounds: First place match: Aaliyah Payne-Parris (Newton) won by fall at :24 over Darlyn Silverio (New Brunswick)
  • 128 pounds: First Place Match: Stephanie Andrade (Hunterdon Central) won by fall at 1:23 over Abigail Wittig (Newton) who took second place.
  • 143 pounds: First place match: Jordyn Brannick (Newton) won by a 14-2 major decision over Emma Matthews (Hunterdon Central)

Head Coach Eric Bollette said that this tournament was a “good start. We’re looking to get better each week.”

Newton will be hosting a tournament on Saturday, January 4. The starting time has yet to be determined. Along with Newton, Paulsboro, South Plainfield, Kingsway, North Hunterdon, Hanover Park, Toms River, and North Caldwell are all planning to be in attendance.
