NEWTON, NJ—The Newton Boys Cross Country team is ready for the 2019 season with four returning athletes and four new faces.
Head Coach Diana Eigner has been coaching Newton for the past 22 years. Their record last year was 9-2 for the boys and 2-9 for the girls.
The four returning varsity players which include sophomores Matt Freund and Gianna Celi, Junior JoJo Lotruglio and senior Peter VanOrden.
Ther four key newcomers, according to Eigner to the cross country team, which includes freshman John Fiessler and Domenic Lotruglio and juniors Tony Dvorsky and Billy O'Gorman.
For the boys’ team, Eigner said that “with some key letter winners lost to graduation, we are looking for the experienced runners to carry the newcomers along rather quickly to fill the shoes of those we lost. We look to be very competitive in the league and at sectionals.”
The six key performers that the team lost to graduation were:
- Michael Rizzo
- Alex Rivas
- Michael Toepfer
- Omar Montalvo
- Danny Florio
- Reese Matonis
The girls’ team, whose strengths include positive attitudes, but happens to lack in numbers, are looking to “improve their individual times throughout the season”, Eigner said.
“Competitive drive is a strength for the boys’ team”, said Eigner, “but there are many newcomers, which could be a weakness.”
The boys and girls cross country team will have their first invitational on Saturday, September 7, away against Roxbury High School.
