Now that school is back in session the Towamencin Township Police Department has received numerous reports of motorists failing to stop and/or remain stopped for school buses displaying red signal lights and with the stop arm extended.

For the safety of school children boarding or departing a school bus it is important that motorists follow the applicable law and know their responsibilities:
1. You must stop when you meet or overtake a stopped school bus with red signal lights and stop arm extended.

2. You must stop when you approach an intersection where a school bus is stopped with red signal lights and stop arm extended.

3. You must stop at least 10 feet away from the school bus.

4. You must wait until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm has been withdrawn before moving.

5. Do not move until all the children have reached a place of safety.

Drivers may proceed on a highway with clearly defined dividing sections (grass, rocks, trees) or physical barriers providing separate roadways. This only applies when the school bus is on the opposite side of the road. When in doubt you should stop to insure the safety of the children.

There are serious penalties for failing to stop for a school bus loading or discharging children that include a $250 fine and a 60-day driver’s license suspension.

The Towamencin Township Police Department takes school bus safety seriously, and police officers aggressively enforce the applicable laws and regulations.
