An Upper Gwynedd man was charged by Hilltown Township Police this month with writing bad checks after he allegedly wrote a personal check for $20,000 for a vehicle purchase on an account with negative funds, police said.

Gabriel Darius Matthews, 25, of the 1400 block of North Wales Road, faces charges of bad checks and unauthorized use of a vehicle, police said.

On Aug. 5, Hilltown Township Police officers responded to a local car dealership for an investigation into a customer with bad checks, police said.

Police said Matthews had purchased a vehicle, allegedly using a personal check written for $20,000.

The check was eventually returned by the bank for non-sufficient funds, police said. Police obtained a search warrant for the checking account, which showed a negative balance, police said.
