SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Basilone Memorial Foundation has pledged $50,000 to support the Steeplechase Cancer Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.

The non-profit organization was founded in 2014 by Kim Van Note and Donald Tozzi, both of Raritan, to commemorate John Basilone, Van Note’s uncle and a Raritan native who was killed in combat in World War II. He was the only enlisted Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross Award.

The Basilone Memorial Foundation holds fundraisers throughout the year, including a Casino Night, Sniper Race, the Basilone Bowl and the upcoming Manila Madness Parachute Drop on September 11th, to support cancer patients and veterans.

“We do this to keep my uncle’s spirit alive and to let people know just who he was,” Van Note says.

“The legacy of one of our local heroes lives on through the generosity of the Basilone Memorial Foundation,” said Donna Castronovo, Major Gifts Officer for the Somerset Health Care Foundation. “The organization’s support of the Steeplechase Cancer Center has helped improve the quality of life for so many in our community who are battling cancer. We are extremely thankful for their continued partnership.”

Tozzi, who works hand in hand with Van Note, had helped organize the annual rubber duck race fundraiser for the Raritan River Festival, proceeds from which also benefitted the Steeplechase Cancer Center.

“Once Don and I formed the Basilone Memorial Foundation, we decided to put the two causes together,” Van Note says. Their work has already paid off for cancer patients: in its inaugural year, the Basilone Memorial Foundation donated over $5,000 to support the center.

The Steeplechase Cancer Center offers comprehensive outpatient cancer care services, including 3D mammography, infusion therapy, radiation therapy, clinical research studies, smoking cessation services, nutritional counseling, complementary medicine programs and the Sanofi US Wellness Boutique.
