WARREN, NJ – Former New York Giants and Green Bay Packer left guard Billy Ard of Watchung, a 1977 graduate of Watchung Hills Regional High School, presented  an NFL Foundation Golden Football to Principal George Alexis on Tuesday, Nov. 17, welcoming his alma mater into the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll.

Watchung Hills is one of 2,000 high schools across the country who has been or will be welcomed into the Super Bowl Honor Roll this year as part of the NFL Foundation’s celebration marking the playing of the 50th Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016 at Levi Stadium, San Francisco, CA.

The High School Honor Roll program asks more than 3,000 players and head coaches who have been active participants in the 50 super bowls to recognize “the schools and communities that have contributed to Super Bowl history and positively impacted the game of football.”

Witnessing the ball presentation by Ard to Principal Alexis was Superintendent Elizabeth Jewett and Rich Seubert, who is a current assistant coach at Watchung Hills and a coach in the Watchung Hills Junior Warriors program.

Accompanying the Golden Football, which Alexis said will be displayed at the school, was a letter from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“Football has always been about more than wins and losses,” Goodell wrote. “The game teaches lessons that last a lifetime. High school football teams from coast to coast have consistently developed citizens of high character by instilling the values of football in their student athletes. The NFL is grateful to you and your community, and honored with you in developing champions on and off the field.”

Ard, who grew up in Watchung, has been active in the community as a volunteer. For four years, he was coach of the Watchung Hills’ freshman team. His children attended Watchung Hills, and his son, Brendan, won a state championship in Wrestling for Watchung Hills.

A 2008 inductee into the Watchung Hills’ Hall of Fame, Ard was a member of the Giants’ 1986 Super Bowl Champion team, which played in the Super Bowl XXI. After Watchung Hills, Ard earned All-American honors in football at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC. He was drafted by the Giants in the 8th round of the NFL draft, and earned All-Pro Honors while in the NFL.
Seubert, a native of Stratford WI., and a 1997 graduate of Columbus Catholic High School, Marshfield, WI., will present an NFL Foundation Golden Football to his own high school alma mater on Monday, Nov. 23. Seubert is a retired veteran of the New York Giants, and like Ard, played as an offensive left guard.  Seubert was a member of the Giants’ 2007 Super Bowl team, which played in Super Bowl XLII. He went on to play at Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL., and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants. He earned All-Pro honors while in the NFL.

Two other graduates of Watchung Hills played in the NFL, and like Ard, both are in the Watchung Hills Hall of Fame. And, like Ard, they both played left guard.
Keith Sims graduated from Watchung Hills in 1985. He earned honorable mention All-American recognition while playing at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. He played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskin, and earned All-Pro honors while in the NFL.

Thomas Glassic graduated from Watchung Hills in 1972. He played his college ball at the University of Virginia, Charlottsville, VA. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos and played for eight seasons, including on the 1977 Denver Bronco team, which played in Super Bowl XII.
