“Sound the Trumpet, Strike the Drum!” opens Crescent Concerts’ 35th season of exciting and varied music programs, all performed in the gothic, cathedral-like splendor of the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, New Jersey.

The award-winning and popular Solid Brass Ensemble opens the special eight concert season on Sunday, September 25 at 3:00 pm with its “Sound the Trumpet, Strike the Drum!” providing everything from medieval and renaissance music to the sounds of the Beach Boys and Big Band renditions.  Solid Brass wants “Music to bring you to your feet through the art of the march and dance.”  The rapport between the professional musicians and the audience is one of the plusses of attending this event!

Then on Sunday, October 9 at 3:00 pm the second offering, “Mallets and Hammers,” is a unique presentation featuring some of the greatest hits by Greg Giannascoli, Marimba Artist, and Ronald Stabinsky, pianist.  These two artists have won awards and performed not just in the U.S. but in Europe and Asia, as well as performances on CBC, NPR radio, and PBS TV.

For the third concert of the season on Saturday, November 12 at 7:00 pm, the Crescent Choral Society, under its new conductor, Clifford Parrish, returns with “I Was Glad,” a program of music from the British Isles.  Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Howells’ Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, Wesley’s Ascribe Unto the Lord are just a few of the compositions that will highlight this unique evening of music.  And, of course, a glance at British music would be incomplete without Parry’s “I Was Glad.”  This promises to be an outstanding concert.

Holidays are anticipated with the fourth concert, this one by the Crescent Singers, highlighting the holiday season with their festive annual “Yuletide by Candlelight” on Sunday, December 11 at 5:00 pm.   The Crescent Singers perform familiar and not so familiar Christmas anthems, carols and songs in the candle lighted and beautiful nave of this famous church.  Clifford Parrish conducts his very experienced and professional choristers bringing the spirit of the holidays to its listeners.

Sunday, February 26 at 3:00 pm, “Showcase for Exceptional Young Artists” features talented young musicians, ages 18 and under, chosen by competitive audition.  These young artists will amaze you.  This annual “Showcase” has been one of the most popular offerings by Crescent Concerts over the years.

“Connections,” our annual Festival of Organists, is scheduled for Sunday, March 19 at 3:00 pm. Performers TBA.  The famous Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church organ is widely viewed as one of the outstanding organs in New Jersey.  This sixth concert of the season features professional organists from the surrounding area and New York.

“Like Father, Like Son” brings back the Crescent Choral Society, joined by a professional orchestra and soloists for C.P.E. Bach’s Magnificat, and J.S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio.  This Easter Concert takes place on Saturday, April 22, 7:00 pm.

The final offering of the 2016-17 season is on Sunday, May 21, at 3:00 pm when the Crescent Singers present their Spring Concert, “The Poet Sings.”  The Crescent Singers present favorite poems set to exquisite music.  Once again, Clifford Parrish, Artistic Director, leads this talented group of singers as the season finale for Crescent Concerts.

Admission for all concerts (except for the free Yuletide concert): General Admission $20, Seniors $15 and Students $5.  Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of performance or are also available during business hours at 908-756-2468.  For a season subscription and other Crescent Concerts information, please  go to our website: webmaster@CrescentConcerts.org
