Fellow horsemen mourn the death of Ruth Mulvey, who competed in the sport of combined driving.

Mulvey died Feb. 10, 2018. She was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa.

Her love for horses began when she was little. Each summer her large family would head to the Catskills to visit their grandparents; she would ride Candy or Champ, horses that belonged to her childhood friend.

Mulvey went on to study animal science at the University of Massachusetts and became a certified veterinary technician. During the early years of her career she worked directly with horses, and then moved on to work as a scientist in a variety of pharmaceutical companies.

Mulvey was a unique woman of faith. She was perpetually grateful that she met Robert, the love of her life, and found true happiness with him. She threw herself into life with all she had.

She enjoyed competitive carriage driving, but always seemed thrilled with the events no matter how she placed.

The Mulveys donated a special carriage to Lord Stirling Stable so those with physical handicaps could also enjoy the sport of driving.

Lately she’d spent endless hours in obedience classes training her dog, Frolic. She’d joyfully put him through his paces for visitors. He’d do so much for a little treat and her abundant praise.

Mulvey and her husband took pleasure in traveling to Europe and through much of the U.S…her travel planning skills are second only to Rick Steves. She loved her family deeply and the many close friends she made on her journey through life. Her optimism, zest for life, and her amazing listening skills made her a joy to be around. She will be sorely missed by friends and family.

She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Ruth Dougherty. She is survived by her husband, Robert, her Uncle Doc and Aunt Joan, her siblings Mike Dougherty, Kathleen MacDonnell, Mary Taylor, John Dougherty, Bet Savich, Jim Dougherty, as well as many in-laws. Aunt Ruth also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who have admired, loved, and enjoyed her over the years.

Visitation was held at Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Feb. 16 at St. John the Baptist, Roman Catholic Church, in Allentown, N.J. Interment was at the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, 2310 Route 34, Suite 1D, Manasquan, N.J. 08736.
