False Teeth: Suspect Charged with Operating Illegal Dentist Practice

SOMERVILLE, NJ – An Elizabeth man has been arrested and charged with operating an unlicensed dental practice in North Plainfield following an undercover investigation, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

Jorge Nolivos, 58, of Orchard Street in Elizabeth, was arrested without incident and charged with second degree possession with the intent to distribute prescription legend drugs, two counts of third degree unlawful practice of dentistry, and possession of hypodermic needle-syringe, a disorderly person’s offense.

Robertson provided the following details:

On April 26, detectives assigned to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant on a Somerset Street apartment in North Plainfield rented by Nolivos. Detectives seized dental instruments, hypodermic needles, and over 100 dosages of the numbing medication lidocaine.

Detectives from the North Plainfield Police Department and investigators from the Consumer Affairs Division of the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General assisted in the search.

Prior to the search warrant execution, an undercover detective from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigation Unit met with Nolivos inside the apartment.  The detective and defendant Nolivos engaged in a brief conversation about the process of receiving dental treatment and the related costs.

The month long investigation was initiated after authorities were alerted that a former patient of  Nolivos’ was hospitalized for an infection and required emergency treatment, according to Robertson.

Detectives are seeking any additional victims that may have used Nolivos.

Nolivos is lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.

Robertson requests anyone who was treated by Nolivos to contact the Somerset County Prosecutors Office Special Investigation Crimes Unit at (908) 231-7100, the North Plainfield Police Department (908) 769-2937 or the Somerset County Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477) or online at www.888577tips.org or www.scpo.net and click on either “Crime Stoppers” or “TIPS HOTLINE”.
