EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Around 4:00 this morning, Tuesday, October 8, an accident involving a tanker truck and an SUV took place on the southbound Turnpike south of interchange 9 at milepost 80.9. There was one fatality. State Police announced that Anthony Jackson, 60, of Pedricktown in Salem County, NJ, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According a spokesperson for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the tanker truck went over the guardrail that separates the outer and inner roadways, so lanes were blocked in both directions.
The tanker was carrying sulfuric acid. No sulfuric acid escaped from the tank during the crash or the cleanup. As of the last update I had (about an hour ago), the cleanup crew was still working to offload the material from the tank.
The authorities expect the cleanup to be completed before the evening rush hour, though traffic is still snarled on the Turnpike and Route 1 in both directions near the scene.
The New Jersey State Police is investigating the crash, having technically occurred in Milltown, Middlesex County, which occurred at 3:48 a.m. Multiple lane closures in area due to investigation. NJSP advises drivers to expect ongoing delays and plan alternate routes. (Twitter.)
