BRIDGEWATER, NJ -- On June 26, 2014, four North Plainfield Canucks are playing in the second annual Basilone Bowl, an all-star game for the best graduating high school football players from Somerset County. The game, sponsored by the United States Marine Corps, is being held at the Bridgewater-Raritan High School football field at 6 p.m. with pre-game celebrations beginning at 5:30.

North Plainfield High School standouts Glenn Benson, Hasani Eason, Kyle Grant and Chris McDowell will represent North Plainfield were selected to play as members of the Devil Dogs squad. They will play against other Somerset County footballers assigned to the Leathernecks.

The game will be played on Thursday, June 26 at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. Tickets are $8 at the gate.

The game honors Raritan native and Marine Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Guadalcanal campaign in the Pacific theatre in World War II. Basilone also served in the European theatre, where he was killed in action during the D-Day invasion on February 19, 1945.  For his actions that day he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
