 Somerset County, NJ -  Summer is often thought of as a time to travel. Some may expect that means the library is put on the back burner until September, when school is back in session and the weather begins to cool. However, Somerset County Library System of New Jersey is actually an ideal summer travel companion. Borrow books for the plane or the beach. Packing a tablet? Access over 80 popular magazines digitally using Flipster through SCLSNJ, more than 19,000 e-books and over 3,600 e-audio books through the SCLSNJ app. And be sure to join the Summer Reading Club to get rewarded for all that travel reading. Looking for the perfect music for the hours you’ll be spending in the car during a road trip? SCLSNJ has over 51,000 CDs to choose from. No travel plans this summer? Get On the Road with SCLSNJ this June. There will be a number of travel-themed programs available at all 10 SCLSNJ library branches.

Travel Tips & Tricks: Disney on a Dime (family program) at SCLSNJ’s North Plainfield Memorial Library branch

June 2, 7-8 pm

On the Road: Masters of The Louvre at SCLSNJ’s Watchung Library branch

June 3, 1-2 pm

Artist and photographer Walter Choroszewski shares his passion for the arts and history with a tour of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Walter showcases 25 artists with interesting biographical backstories and interpretations of their iconic artworks. The paintings span over 500 years from the Renaissance to the Realists and reflect European history from an artist’s perspective. For more information: sclsnj.org/s/wglontheroad

 

Blairsden & The Creation of Ravine Lake at SCLSNJ’s Warren Township Library branch

June 4, 7-8:30 pm

Author and lecturer W. Barry Thomson will discuss the creation, in the 1890s, of Ravine Lake and the construction of the first home of the Somerset Hills Country Club, one of the country's first golf clubs. He will also cover the building of the adjacent Blairsden, one of the most beautiful and architecturally significant Beaux-Arts ensembles of house and landscape in America. Hummingbirds in Your Backyard with Edith Lit at SCLSNJ’s Manville’s Library branch

June 5, 1:30-3:30 pm

Discover how to attract these wonderful little birds to your yard, deck, window box or garden year after year. See actual videos of flight and feeding. Learn about breeding, banding, habitats and the migration of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Enter the raffle to win a Hummingbird Feeder. Edith Lit, backyard nature enthusiast, amateur photographer, software instructor, and Bridgewater Library staff member of 19 years, will facilitate the program. Go, Van Gogh! at SCLSNJ’s Somerville Library branch (teens & adults)

June 6, 2-3 pm

A Dutch pastor turned painter, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) in the last decade of his 37 years produced more than 2,100 artworks, including 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches, and prints. In his final letter to his brother, Theo, Van Gogh stated that, as he did not have any children, he viewed his paintings as his progeny. Explore then, Vincent and some of his “brilliant children” especially those in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Walter Choroszewski offers a fun and light-hearted overview of “Happiness” presenting historical perspectives from ancient philosophers like Plato and Confucius, to inspiring quotes from modern sages like Will Rogers and Groucho Marx.
