PLAINFIELD, NJ - It's official. Giovanna's Restaurant, a South Avenue staple in Plainfield dining, will close its doors for good on June 30.
Giovanna's, established in 1983, has been a popular place to celebrate baby showers, graduations, birthdays, and more. The 20th Annual Wine Tasting Dinner for the Rotary of the Plainfields was recently held there, and the group is actively seeking a new location to hold its weekly lunch meetings. The Plainfield Symphony Orchestra concluded its 99th season with a party there in April.
The restaurant's location is included in a list of property addresses in the South Avenue East Redevelopment Plan. (The lot at the south corner of Terrill Road that is occupied by a 7-Eleven is not part of it.)
At its Oct. 4 meeting, Plainfield's Planning Board voted to approve the redevelopment plan that would include retail convenience with fuel service as a permitted use. The minority on the board unsuccessfully advocated to remove the allowance of gas stations. At the Dec. 11 Plainfield City Council meeting the ordinance up for second reading passed with a 6-1 vote.
Then, at the Planning Board's March 20 meeting, almost 100 residents and business owners turned out to voice their opposition to a proposal for preliminary and final site plan approval to construct a 5,100-square foot 24/7 Wawa food market that would include fueling stations by applicant South Terrill Urban Renewal, LLC.
Representatives at the March meeting said fuel deliveries would be made to the underground storage tanks one to two times every 24 hours on demand. Fresh groceries would be delivered four to five times per week, and dairy items would be made three times per week, both via tractor trailer. The property would include six multi-product dispensers, and each MPD would have two gas pumps.
The board voted 6-2 in favor of preliminary approval at the meeting. At this point, the applicant has not yet received final site plan approval.
Some deliveries would be made to the proposed Wawa location via tractor trailer; the one pictured here is turning onto South Ave. from Terrill Rd.
