GREEN BROOK, NJ – The Green Brook Police Department will once again participate in the “Operation Take Back New Jersey” prescription medication disposal program. A collection site will be located in the lobby of police headquarters, located at 109 Greenbrook Road, on Saturday, Oct 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Operation Take Back New Jersey provides residents the opportunity to dispose of their unwanted, unused and/or expired prescription medications in a safe manner. Additionally, the program is anonymous and no questions or requests for identification will be made of persons disposing of medication.
The Green Brook Police Department hosted its first Operation Take Back New Jersey program last April and, according to Chief G. Christopher Kurz, it was a success. “Many residents took advantage of the opportunity to dispose of their unwanted prescription medications in a safe manner,” Kurz said. “We hope to see even more participation this time around, as the abuse of prescription medications continues to be a serious problem and many people don’t know how to safely dispose of them once they’re no longer needed.”
Medication may be disposed of either in its original container or by removing the medication from the container and depositing it directly into the drug disposal box; if the original container is submitted, it is encouraged that the prescription label be removed if it contains any personal identifying information. Liquid products, such as cough medicine, should remain sealed in their original container; the depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage. Syringes and other sharp instruments will not be accepted.
“Through this program, we are able to continue to provide assistance with disposing unwanted medications that may otherwise end up in the wrong hands leading to an accidental poisoning or overdose,” Kurz said.
