GREEN BROOK, NJ –The Green Brook Police Department is proud to announce participation in this month’s “Operation Take Back New Jersey” prescription medication disposal program. The department will host a collection site in the lobby of police headquarters, located at 109 Greenbrook Road, on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Orchestrated through the Drug Enforcement Administration, the program provides a convenient and safe means for residents to dispose of unused, unwanted and/or expired prescription medications. This program is anonymous and no questions or requests for identification will be made of persons disposing of medication.
According to Green Brook Police Chief G. Christopher Kurz, the ‘Operation Take Back New Jersey’ program is a great opportunity for residents to dispose of their unwanted prescription medications in a safe manner. “Abuse of such medications is a growing problem, and many people are not aware of how to safely dispose of them,” said Chief Kurz. “Through this program, we are able to assist people with disposing of unwanted medications that may otherwise end up in the wrong hands leading to an accidental poisoning or overdose.”
Residents are encouraged to bring their unused, unwanted and/or expired prescription medications for disposal; syringes and other sharp instruments will not be accepted. Medication may be disposed of either in its original container or by removing the medication from the container and depositing it directly into the drug disposal box; if the original container is submitted, it is encouraged that the prescription label be removed if it contains any personal identifying information. Additionally, liquid products, such as cough medicine, should remain sealed in their original container; the depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
