SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Guy Moretti began his career in real estate back in 1979 when he joined his father’s South Plainfield agency. At the time, Gene Moretti Realty operated out of a 1,000-square-foot office on the corner of Front Street and Maple Avenue and had just four agents. In 1983, Guy purchased the business and 12 years later they affiliated with Century 21. In 1998, Moretti moved the agency across the street to its current location, taking over a vacant bank property that sat at 225 Maple Avenue.  Over the course of the next four years, Moretti grew his firm from four agents to 80 full-time agents, nine employees and 120 part-time agents with offices in South Plainfield and Somerset.

 

Three years ago, Moretti sold his agency to Prudential New Jersey Properties and in early 2014, Prudential sold off its real estate division to Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. These days, Guy and Toni Moretti no longer manage the business but instead solely focus on listing and selling real estate.  They have created a six-member sales team under the Berkshire Hathaway brand.  Team Moretti – as it is appropriately called – includes Guy, his wife Toni, their oldest son Eugene, Debbie Malecki, Steve Gold and transaction management specialist Gi Sofka.

 

Together, The Moretti Team specializes in residential homes including short sales and foreclosures along with commercial properties and land development. With the Team’s real estate background “chances are whatever your real estate needs, we’ve done it and understand it,” said Moretti, noting, “Most agents currently in the real estate business do not have the diverse experience we posses as a team. Because of that experience few can deliver the results we produce as a team.”

He added, proudly, “There’s a great deal of proficiency on our team. We’ve had our hands in almost every significant development in South Plainfield.”

Overseeing a small group of motivated agents – as opposed to running an agency –gives Moretti a chance to do what he really enjoys – working with buyers and sellers directly. “We built our business by going the extra mile. The difference is when it was our company we depended on our agents who worked for us to deliver that service,” he said. “Now, I am the agent and can deliver the quality of service customers want.  It’s much more personally rewarding.”

And, it appears to be working. In 2013 and 2014, Team Moretti earned the Berkshire Hathaway Real Estate Affiliate’s Chairman’s Circle Gold award and was also named to Berkshires 2013’s and 2014’s Pinnacle Group. Additionally, the Moretti Team was involved in over 70 transactions last year and, as a result, was ranked among Berkshire Hathaway’s top teams, companywide. “This is quite an honor, especially since Berkshire, as the second largest independent real estate company in the state, has over 700 agents within its 18 locations,” said Moretti.

Over the years, said Moretti, a lot has changed in the real estate field. “When I first started, contracts were a one-page document; there were no inspections, attorney reviews or mortgage brokers. Mortgage commitments took a week to 10 days to secure and properties closed within 30 days,” he said. “Things are much more litigious and complicated now, banks aren’t lending money like they were and the process is much more involved.”

One thing that hasn’t changed for Moretti, however, is the importance of buying a home and how it feels to navigate buyers and sellers through the process. “Buying a home is the biggest investment someone can make and to have that someone remember you – even years later – makes you feel good,” he said.
