NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Spanish Honor Society at North Plainfield High School (NPHS) recently held its annual clothing drive to help those less fortunate this winter. The community service project ran from Nov 14 to Dec 21 and, this year, students, teachers and staff donated bags of winter clothing, including hats, coats, gloves, sweaters, and scarfs which will be donated to the Salvation Army and the North Plainfield Community Center.

“I think many times people take something as simple as clothing for granted,” said Lauren Lattimore, a NPHS senior and honor society co-president. “However, it is greatly appreciated when the students of NPHS take the time to go through their closets, and put in the effort to bring those clothes to school, knowing that they will provide comfort for someone in need.”

The NPHS Spanish Honor Society is comprised of 24 students in 11th and 12th grade and run under the direction of advisor and Spanish teacher Isabel Roca. “The purpose of this society is to provide for the Spanish speaking people, as well as everyone else in community,” said Roca. “We do fundraisers and community service activities to shed light on our society.”

In addition to the clothing drive, members of the Spanish Honor Society helped serve as translators during parent-teacher conferences at Stony Brook Elementary School on Nov. 21 and, for the holidays, members decorated Christmas cards that were given to NPHS staff and teachers.

“This year the Spanish Honor Society has been focusing on improving the community around us,” said senior and society co-president Emily McGrath. “Due to the high Spanish speaking population in North Plainfield, our society is working to make our presence more visible, and improve the community to the best of our abilities.”
