SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and throughout the month, Safe+Sound Somerset (formerly the Recourse Center of Somerset) will be sponsoring various events in memory of those who have died as a result of domestic abuse and to celebrate those who have survived.

On Thursday, Oct. 6, Safe+Sound Somerset will hold its 28th Annual Candlelight Vigil to celebrate the survivors of domestic abuse and to remember those who lost their lives. This year’s candlelight vigil will take place at the Vermeule Community Center, beginning at 7 p.m.

“The Borough of North Plainfield is honored to host this special event with the Safe+Sound Somerset," said Mayor Michael Giordano, Jr. “Domestic violence affects many in our communities, especially our most vulnerable citizens. We are pleased to do our part to raise awareness of this issue and will continue to partner with the Safe+Sound Somerset in the future.”

The Oct. 6 event will include client speaker testimonials and keynote speakers as well as a domestic violence silhouette display, candlelight procession, and gathering. Life-sized silhouettes representing the women, children, and men from Somerset County who lost their lives to domestic violence will be displayed outside the community center; each silhouette will bear the story of the victim and each victim’s name will be read during the vigil.

“At any given moment, 42,000 individuals are suffering from domestic violence and that’s just in Somerset County. It is something that can happen to anyone regardless of race, religion or social-economic background,” said Veronica Finlay, development director for Safe+Sound Somerset. “Anyone can be affected and it’s in every community in the county. Together, we can raise awareness about domestic abuse and teen dating violence to break the cycle of violence in our community.”
