NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – North Plainfield Junior Ronaldo Garcia snapped a 1-1 tie, by banging a rebound past Johnson goalie Zack Sandler to lead the North Plainfield Canucks to a 2-1 victory over Johnson. The game was a matchup of two previously undefeated NJSIAA Group #2 squads.
North Plainfield open the scoring on a goal by Panchito Corral. Corral was able to knock in the rebound off of teammate Allen Gavilanes’ shot. North Plainfield used a pressure defense to take a 1-0 lead into the half.
“We were able to interrupt their play today,” said North Plainfield Head Coach Chuck Henriques. “This is a quality win for us. They are a quality team, we had them pressing at the end, and they did not get the finishes that they needed to win this game.”
Henriques was right. This was a quality win for an undefeated North Plainfield Team that has flown under the radar so far this season. The Canucks can expect that to change, however, when the next series of power points are released by the NJSIAA. Entering the Central Jersey Group #2 matchup North Plainfield trailed Johnson by 19 power points.
A.L. Johnson’s Brian Nieto knotted the game at 1-1, 23 minutes into the second half. Nieto was able to score on a feed from Liam Deacy. That knotted the game until Garcia’s game winner five minutes later.
Garcia’s game winning goal was his team leading ninth goal of the season. “We play well and communicate well together when on the field,” said Garcia, when asked about the success of both himself and the team.
North Plainfield goalie Allan Del Salto got the win turning away five Johnson shots on goal. A.L. Johnson goalie Zack Sandler also had five saves for Johnson.
“We can build on this win,” said Henriques. “We played a total game. We played defense together as a unit.”
Henriques’ unit is now 5-0, and takes on South Hunterdon and a tough Bound Brook squad next week.
