NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Bernards boys soccer team passed its first test in the state tournament. The 12th-seeded Mountaineers went on the road and shut out fifth-seeded North Plainfield, 4-0, in the opening round of the Central Jersey, Group 2 state tournament on Tuesday.

Drini Zenelaj scored two goals for the Mountaineers (8-5-4), who outshot the Canucks, 9-7. Will Luik got Bernards on the board with a goal from the left side about 15 yards away just seven minutes into the contest.
Joel Parades also scored a goal for Bernards, which led, 3-0, at halftime. Bernards goalie Andres Lezme stopped all seven shots that he faced.

Bernards will play either Gov. Livingston or Matawan in the quarterfinal round on Friday.
