BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Somerset County Sheriff's Office, with the Bridgewater Township Police Department and other local officials, led a procession Saturday to honor the memory of Kaitlin Cowley, a former Bridgewater resident who was killed in the line of duty in Louisiana in April.

Cowley, who spent her childhood in Bridgewater and whose parents still live in Martinsville, was killed in a single vehicle crash in Baton Rouge April 20, at the age of 33.

According to a report from the Officer Down Memorial Page, the crash occurred after she left an assignment at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women with inmate security at the Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. Her vehicle left the road and struck a tree, causing fatal injuries.

The procession in her memory began on Newmans Lane and rode through Martinsville, passing by firefighters saluting at the Martinsville Fire Department, where Cowley's father has been a volunteer since 1992.

Flags were flown over the procession route, which then got on Route 78, heading toward a memorial service in Maplewood.
