BERNARDS TWP., NJ _ Planning Board officials had hoped to wrap up its hearings in December on a 280-unit housing proposal at the end of Mountainview Boulevard in the southern part of the township; however, after testimony from witnesses for the developer, the hearing was been carried over for continuation this Tuesday night.

The proposal from SJP Properties is on the agenda for the Planning Board scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 in the main meeting room at town hall, 1 Collyer Lane, Basking Ridge.

The housing plan would include 62 units of "affordable housing" units that were part of the township's court settlement for the latest round of state-ordered homes for low to moderate income residents.

If the plan is approved by the Planning Board, the multifamily housing would be built on a now undeveloped tract of just over 71 acres near the Memorial Sloan Kettering facility.

A corporate office complex had previously been planned _ and approved _ for development on the site. The property was rezoned for potential development with multifamily housing as part of the township's state affordable housing plan.

The applicant is proposing to construct 77 studio and one-bedroom units, 130 two-bedroom units, and 13 three-bedroom units on about 30 acres at the end of the roadway. 

Another 60 three-bedroom townhouse development, part of the same application, is proposed for construction on almost 42 acres. 

Two site walks were held on the property, the first while leaves were on the trees, and the second on Nov. 16, after many of the leaves were off the trees. 

Earlier in the fall, Ron Kennedy, engineer for the applicant, told the Planning Board that the plan for the buildings would use the grade changes of the property to help shield the development from neighbors' view.

"We are trying to work with the grade [and] get the buildings as low as possible," Kennedy said.
