NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield strongly feels the dictionary has a place in every school child’s library and is useful from early elementary school through college. To help promote that ideal, the local service club is launching its annual Dictionary Project.

The Rotary Club recently ordered enough dictionaries to give one to every third grade student in the North Plainfield and Plainfield School Districts. The books are gifts from the Rotary; they belong to the student, who is encouraged to use it and care for it as a precious gift.

“We always tell the children a little about Rotary and what it means to belong to a service club,” said Tom Reedy, chair of the Dictionary Project Committee. “It’s amazing to hear them explain the concept of service and of clubs.”

The Dictionary Project gives the gift of learning to students and each year since 2004 the Club has given away free dictionaries to Plainfield and North Plainfield third graders. This fall, teams of Rotarians and volunteers will visit every elementary school in the two communities, handing out the dictionaries to third graders in their classrooms or in an assembly setting. The presentations are scheduled at the schools’ convenience during morning hours, which sometimes stretches the schedule of visits into November.

The books are purchased by the Rotary through an organization called The Dictionary Project at a cost of $2 or less each, including shipping. In total, the Plainfield-North Plainfield club distributes some 900 dictionaries each year at a cost of over $3,500.

“We hope to recoup some of the expenditures with grant awards,” said the Rotary Club’s President Ravenell Williams, adding, “We have already received an award of $860 from our own Rotary District 7510.”

Volunteers are welcome to assist the Rotary Club when they present the dictionaries. Anyone interested can email secretary@rotarypnp.org for more information.

The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield also welcomes new members who have an interest in serving others while working with others and developing new friendships. Meetings are held Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. at Giovanna’s Restaurant, 1462 South Avenue in Plainfield. Guests are welcome.
