In 1995 Nathan moved to North Plainfield and quickly got involved in the community. He served two terms on the Borough Council from 1999 to 2006, chaired the North Plainfield Street Fair in 2001 through 2003, and has volunteered as a youth coach, with organizations like the Parking Authority and Business Association, and on a number of committees and boards.

The franchising of The Alternative Press of North Plainfield/Green Brook is in keeping with's goal to locate local residents who are qualified and invested in keeping local residents informed of local news, sports, entertainment and events, while also ensuring that local businesses who promote their products and services to a purely local audience, will prosper and grow. These professional business people are well-known and respected in their own communities, and want to ensure the prosperity of their own towns, while forging an exciting and involved local lifestyle for themselves  and their families.

According to TAP founder and Chief Executive Officer Michael Shapiro, "It's gratifying to have developed a local journalism model that allows others to build a solid business that offers quality of life and the ability to give back to the community.  Much of every dollar made by our franchisees goes right back into the community."
"We stand with our local businesses in our towns.  We are all about local helping local," he added.

The Alternative Press
was founded in 2008 and is the first all-online newspaper to receive accreditation by the New Jersey Press Association.
