WATCHUNG, NJ - Take a closer look as you move around town. You might spot one of the Watchung PTO's Kindness Rocks! If you come across a Kindness Rock, snap a photo with it, upload to social media, and use the tag #WatchungPTO

As part of the Random Acts of Kindness Month - the Watchung PTO hosted a Kindness Rocks Zoom Painting Party, co-hosted by the Bayberry Art Teacher Ms. Higgins and the Valley View Art Teacher Ms. Richman. Students and families decorated and painted rocks with inspirational messages and colorful designs. Ms. Richman states "Art is a necessary component of our lives, a vital contributor to our learning, to our well- being and, in essence, to our existence.  It helps us develop values, understand the past, and organize the elements of our lives." Her counterpart at Bayberry, Ms. Higgins, echoed "Art is a wonderful way to connect and share with one another during a time where we need it most! Color alone can send a strong message about how we are feeling. With these kindness rocks, students used colors, designs and positive messages to spread some joy in our town. Thanks to the PTO, we were able to connect as a community outside school and sprinkle some encouragement throughout Watchung."

These rocks will soon be placed around Watchung. The kids hope to bring a smile to their neighbors' faces and can't wait to follow the travels of their rocks!

"We are so thankful that the Home Depot of Watchung donated most of the supplies so we could provide individual take-home painting kits to our children. The partnerships we've felt around Watchung from both our families and our local businesses have been overwhelming" says Daryl Eisenberg Knegten, Watchung PTO President.

The Kindness Rocks joins another Kindness Project - The Crayon Initiative. Families are encouraged to bring in their old, broken crayons to bins in both the Bayberry and Valley View foyers. Those crayons are sent to The Crayon Initiative, where the crayons are melted down, made into new ones, and then sent to children’s hospitals across the United States.

In the month of February, students pledged Random Acts of Kindness. As they pay the kindness forward, the classes with the most pledges will each win a donut voucher, generously donated by Duck Donuts in Green Brook. Along with the pledges, the Watchung PTO launched a direct donation campaign to raise needed funds to maintain some of their regular expenses, ensuring their ability to fully fund their initiatives for the students the rest of the year. Please consider donating or, if eligible, purchasing your 2020-2021 membership, so that the Watchung PTO can continue to provide these wonderful programs. Your donation is tax deductible and greatly appreciated!

Ongoing efforts from the Watchung PTO include Marino's Mondays, Wasu Wednesdays, AmazonSmile (select Watchung Borough Parent-Teacher Organization in your Amazon account and Amazon donates with every purchase!), and the Birthday Sign Rental with Pinata Add-On. Visit for more information.
