What’s Happening at Holy Savior Academy

Editor's Note - The articles below were written by students at Holy Savior Academy

HALLOWEEN – Nick R.

Holy Savior Academy celebrated Halloween in many different ways this year:  parties, parades and crafts are just a few of the activities the participated in.  There was a Halloween parade where all of the children gathered around and walked outside of the school into the back parking lot.  The grades also did their own Halloween celebrations in class and Halloween themed activities.  The Pre-K had a class party and danced to Halloween songs.  The Kindergarten read a Halloween poem, and the Second Grade were given treats and surprise crafts.  The Fourth and Fifth graders had a class party and were very excited for the parade.  The Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grades all went to the cafeteria to have a Halloween party.  They were given food and played Halloween-themed music.  Halloween is always exciting at Holy Savior Academy.

Thanksgiving Food Drive & Veteran’s Day Drive– Abigail M.

November is the month of giving thanks.  Holy Savior Academy will be sharing their blessings with those without or lacking necessities.  Our school is hosting a food drive that will benefit the Sacred Heart Food Pantry.  From cleaning products to condiments, families will be able to donate until Tuesday, November 21st.  Our Veteran’s Day drive has concluded and the donations went to the NJ Veterans Memorial Home of Menlo Park.  We collected diabetic socks, deodorant, shaving cream, and more necessities for those who served our country.  Those whom have donated were allowed to dress down in red, white and blue on November 10th.

Toy Drive & Giving Tree – Remi R.

We all know the holidays.  The final months of the year when everywhere you look, everything and everyone is merry and bright.  But, we all somehow forget the big portion of the season.  Giving back.  Holy Savior Academy and their National Junior Honor Society are making sure that their school is giving back this holiday season.

Along with the November Thanksgiving food drive, and the Veteran’s Day collection, in December, Holy Savior Academy is hosting their annual Christmas Giving Tree and Christmas Toy Drive.  The Giving Tree is a month long collection where kids go up to the two trees set up in the school lobby.  Then, the fun part…choosing the paper ornament.  Each ornament is labeled with an age, gender, and object to buy for someone in need.  Ages range from toddlers to adults and objects range from toys to blankets.

A handful of seventh and eighth graders that have been welcomed into the National Junior Honor Society are helping host the Christmas Toy Drive.  Starting November 27th, the honor society is collecting toys to give to children who may not have the best toys to play with this Christmas.  Students are encouraged to donate any toys that appeal to younger children—teddy bears, dolls, and toy cars.

Go and give back this holiday season.  Help make somebody’s day a little bit merrier.

Ring Mass – Colin W. and Jackson G.

Holy Savior Academy will hold its annual Eighth Grade Ring Ceremony on Tuesday November 28th.  The students will enjoy a private breakfast early in the morning.  A special Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church at 10am.  Bishop James F. Checchio will lead the Mass and present each student with his or her graduation ring.  We asked two of our 8th graders; Nick Chadwell and Arianna Waldron how excited there are for the event.  Arianna said, “So excited!”  Nick followed, “I’m very excited for it.  We’re getting something that we can remember the school by.”

The church is located at 149 South Plainfield Avenue in South Plainfield, NJ.  Parents, family, and friends are welcome to attend.  The students are expected to graduate in June 2018 and many will move on to local Catholic high schools.  Save the date for our Mass, Thursday, November 28th!
