To the Editor:
As a chair of the Rare Disease Congressional Caucus, Congressman Leonard Lance has been a strong advocate for those who have been stricken with uncommon health issues and last year helped to pass the 21st Century Cures Act. Yet on Friday, Congressman Lance voted to take away the health insurance of those very souls he claims to be on the side of.
The Affordable Care Act makes sure that insurance companies cannot deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, cannot institute annual or lifetime caps on coverage and that adult children can stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26. Without those protections, the families of sick persons will once again be a hospital stay away from potential financial ruin.
Congressman Lance and his Republican colleagues have spent the last seven years shouting “repeal and replace,” yet during that time failed to draft any replacement for the Affordable Care Act. Despite the lack of a replacement, they have pushed forward with repeal and asked the public, trust us, we'll have a replacement eventually.
Congresman Lance said of his initiatives to fight rate diseases, “Patients are waiting.” They are indeed, Congressman Lance.
