WARREN, NJ - The games were close and the girls played first in Thursday’s matchup between Watchung Hills and Gill St. Bernards. After an early and strong start and a close second half, the Watchung Hills girls defeated Gill St. Bernards at home, 52-48.
Senior Mahogany Jenkins led the way with 14 points and 7 rebounds to help the Warriors improve to 9-1 on the season. The Warriors led Gill 28-13 at the half but the Knights closed the gap in the second half.
Jayden Baltuch added 11 points while Alexa Santo and Scarlett Glasser-Nehls each pitched in 8 points for Watchung Hills. Bella Murray had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists for the Warriors. The Knights’ Ella Fajardo led all scorers with 27 points.
The Warrior boys took the early lead in the first quarter but never led again, recording the first loss of the season to Gill, 57-46. At the half, the Gill boys led Watchung Hills 27-19 after a 15-5 second quarter for the Knights. Michael Bressler sank 19 points and Chad Martini had a 10-10 double double for Watchung Hills.
At one point the Knights were up by 15 points in the third and led 41-32 after the third quarter. With 4:56 left in the game, Watchung Hills hit 6 unanswered points to close the gap to 44-38. Bressler hit back-to-back threes with 1:53 remaining to close the gap to 51-44, but Gill answered for the final score, 57-46.
Denver Anglin led Gill with 19 points and Zach Martini had added 11 points and brought down 14 rebounds.
Watchung Hills' boys next play Uncommon Charter at home on Friday at 7 pm and the girls host Cranford on Saturday at 10 am.
