NEWARK, NJ - Tuesday was Senor Cruz Day and the first round of the boys varsity state soccer game between Watchung Hills and Newark East Side began with a moment of silence in remembrance of Watchung Hills teacher and coach Juan Carlos Cruz who died on Saturday. Jonatas Barbosa Pereira went on to score two goals to lead No. 1 Newark East Side over No. 16 Watchung Hills in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 tournament on Tuesday, 5-2.
Pawel Cudnoch had two second-half goals and Christian Logan made four saves for Watchung Hills.
"Congratulations to our boys soccer team on a great season!" said Director of Athletics Chris Van Vliet. "Our team showed tremendous heart today under difficult circumstances. They made us all proud, and honored Coach Cruz with dignity. To Coach Leonow, his staff, and all players and parents, thank you for an enjoyable soccer season."
Newark East Side advances to Thursday's quarterfinals and will face No. 8 Elizabeth.
