WARREN, NJ - Watchung Hills quarterback Chad Martini went 28-of-36 with 302 yards and two touchdowns , but got sacked four times as Watchung Hills (3-1) fell to Rahway(4-1) on Saturday, 34-27. The Warriors fumbled three times.
“All the credit to coach Russo and his team, we will learn from this and improve for next week,” said WHRHS head coach Rich Seubert. “ I will make sure we are ready to play against Union on Friday night. Thanks to all the families on both sides for coming out to support both teams today.”
Watchung Hills took the early lead on a one-yard Martini sneak. Spencer Ostroff added the PAT for a 7-0 Warrior lead. But Rahway’s Rashon Bradford, on the first play of the second quarter, ran for 69-yards and a TD to tie it up.
Rahway took the lead when Nasir Arribas hit Zaire Crutchfield for another Rahway TD with 6 minutes left in the half.
With 42 seconds left in the half Martini hit John Kountoris with a 15-yard TD pass and Ostroff’s PAT was good. 42 seconds left in the half and the game was tied but Arribas connected with Bradford on first down for another Rahway TD. The kick was good and Rahway led 20-14 at the break.
The Warriors scored first in the third, Martini to Justin Drew’s- to close the gap to 21-20 but the kick was wide. Bradford scored on a five-yard run for Rahway but the two point conversion failed. And then Rahway recovered a Warrior fumble and Bradford ran 29-yards for another TD. The PAT was good to lift Rahway, 34-20 with just under 9 minutes left.
Watchung Hills responded with a 54-yard drive and a Martini one-yard keeper for a TD. Ostroff’s PAT was good to bring g the Warriors within seven,34-27 with 5:27 left in the game. And that was it for scoring.
Watchung Hills next faces Union at home on Friday.
