WARREN, NJ - Watchung Hills’ quarterback Chad Martini threw for three touchdowns to lead the Warriors over Wayne Hills on Saturday, 35-14.
Wayne Hills scored first, just four minutes into the first quarter, but the rest of the first half was all Warriors.
“I am so incredibly proud of the resiliency of our players and coaches who have had to overcome so many obstacles this season,” said WHRHS Director of Athletics Dan Root. “Today the Warriors beat an excellent team. What an amazing way to end the season for our 22 seniors.”
The Wayne Hills Patriots won the North I Group III state sectional championship in 2002, 2004-2008, 2010 and 2011, and won the North I Group IV title in 2016 and 2018
Nirio Garcia ran it in from 6 yards out for a Warrior touchdown and Spencer Ostroff hit the extra point tying the score at 7 with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Martini threw a 52 yard yard TD pass to Brendan Vlasak with Ostroff’s extra point giving the Warriors a 14-7 lead with 8:15 left in the first half and with :42 seconds left in the first half, Shane Kelly ran it in from 2 yards out for another Warrior TD. Ostroff made the extra point giving the Warriors a 21-7 lead going into the break.
And the second half was more of the same. Martini hit John Bechtle with a 31 yard TD pass, Ostroff made the extra point giving the Warriors a 28-7 lead with 6:30 left in the third. And Martini threw a 45 yard TD pass to Justin Drews. giving the Warriors a 35-7 lead with 7:50 left in the game after Ostroff’s PAT was good.
Wayne Hills got on the board again on a 26 yard TD pass making the score 35-14 in favor of the Warriors with 5:40 left in the game. And that was the game. Watchung Hills finishes the season 5-2.
