SUCCASUNNA, NJ - In one of the most anticipated Opening Day matchups, Watchung Hills traveled to take on Roxbury Friday, where Ally Grunstein scored the only goal of the game to lead the Lady Warriors to a 1-0 victory.
Grunstein's goal in the eighth minute with an assist by Melanie Cunha turned out to be the game winner with only 10 total shots between the two teams in the entire game.
Kaylee Donnelly saved three for Watchung Hills and Sarah Olivero stopped six for Roxbury.
The past six seasons, Watchung Hills has put together a 78-37-9 mark, including last year’s 15-6 campaign, coach Brian Figueiredo's first, which resulted in a trip to the Somerset County Championship as well a postseason run to the North 2, Group 4 semis.
Eight seniors graduated, but a group of four-year starters return including last years leading scorer Grunstein (20 goals, 8 assists) and top defender Nicole Parisi.
This year, Parisi will join junior Tara Panella in the middle and Parisi and Grunstein are co-captains.
Parisi and Grunstein have selected for the team motto, “Good is not good when better is expected.”
The Lady Warriors will travel to Ramsey on Sept. 8.
