Warren Joins National Movement to 'Turn the Country Purple" Shining PurpleLight on Pancreatic Cancer

New Jersey residents and volunteers of the Northern New Jersey Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will join thousands of supporters across the U.S. to ’turn the country purple’ at PurpleLight Northern New Jersey.

PurpleLight events take place across the country uniting the largest community of advocates shining a purple spotlight on pancreatic cancer. The volunteer-led, free, awareness event is intended to illuminate hope for a growing community touched by the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S.

The community will come together on April 30, 2017 to honor survivors and remember those who have lost their battle with pancreatic cancer. The event is also intended to inspire local residents to take immediate action against one of the nation’s deadliest cancers by supporting the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s bold initiative to double survival by 2020.

“The devastation of pancreatic cancer isn’t talked about like other cancers, so it can be easily forgotten and many patients feel alone in their diagnosis,” said Volunteer Chair Franco Juricic, resident of Highland Park and 8-year survivor of pancreatic cancer. “PurpleLight is a beacon of hope; it reminds you that you’re never alone and your loved one will never be forgotten. An entire community is fighting the battle with you. That’s an incredible feeling.”

The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. at Camp Harmony, 206 Mount Horeb Road, Warren.  Bert Baron, 1450 WCTC Talk Radio’s award-winning host of “Jersey Central”, will emcee the event, which will include the reading the names of those lost to pancreatic cancer as well as current survivors of the disease.  Participants will stand while their loved one’s name is read to pay tribute and wage hope in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

The American Cancer Society reports an estimated 53,070 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and approximately 41,780 will die from the disease this year. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is working to double survival by 2020 by continuing to directly fund research, advocate for increased funding and resources from the national government, raise awareness through community outreach, and provide excellent patient services and support for novel initiatives like Clinical Trial Finder, Know Your TumorSM personalized medicine service and the Patient Registry.
