NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – P-Funk North’s self-recorded and self-produced freshman album ‘Buds Won’t Break Your Heart’ will be released Oct. 8 and to celebrate a special live performance will take place at evening at 10th Street Live in Kenilworth.

"I'm really looking forward to the album release show,” said P-Funk North’s drummer Patrick Tucker, noting that during the Oct. 8 event, the band will perform ‘Buds Won’t Break Your Heart’ in its entirety. “It is so much more than just a concert at this point; we are really putting on a full production. It's going to be a great night.”

P-Funk North is a reggae-rock band comprised of North Plainfield natives Tucker, Joel Oviedo (lead/rhythm guitar), and Dave Sloyan (bass guitar and lead vocals); the band’s name stems from Sloyan’s longtime nickname for his hometown.

“Growing up, Dave always referenced North Plainfield as P-Funk North and it stuck and came into play when naming the band,” Tucker said, noting that some of P-Funk North’s biggest musical influences include Sublime and the band has also performed covers by Bob Marley, Michael Jackson and the Beatles along with the Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera.

In addition to playing locally at 10th Street Live and New Brunswick’s Old Bay Restaurant, P-Funk North performs at numerous Jersey Shore venues during the summer. Additionally, in July 2015, P-Funk North spent a week on the road, performing in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania before returning home to begin putting together their debut album.

For ‘Buds Won’t Break Your Heart,’ P-Funk North worked closely with Ryan Weil of Weilhouse Productions. They began putting the album together in January 2016 and, over the next seven months, wrote, recorded, and produced as well as designed the artwork for the 12-track album.

“This album has been a long time in the making,” said Tucker. “I am so proud of what we have accomplished and I can't wait for the world to hear it. It's the perfect representation of us as a band.”

Both Sloyan and Oviedo are self-taught musicians and graduates of North Plainfield High School while Tucker, who attended Immaculata High School, earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts with a concentration in music from Raritan Valley College.

During high school, Tucker took drum lessons from Sloyan and, two years later, they formed the band ‘Whatever’s Clever.’ After six years together, that band split up with Sloyan joining forced with Oviedo and a third member to form P-Funk North. However, in 2015, when their drummer left, Sloyan and Oviedo reached out to Tucker and the trio of North Plainfield natives have been writing songs and performing together ever since.

“The most rewarding thing for the three of us is, when we are out playing somewhere, and we see people enjoying our music,” said Tucker, adding, “I always wanted to be a musician. I love the way music communicates with people; you don't need to understand the same language to enjoy it,” said Tucker.

P-Funk North’s album release performance will be held at 10th Street Live, which is located at 104 North 10th Street in Kenilworth, on Saturday, Oct. 8. Doors open at 7 p.m. with opening act Backyard Superheroes going on at 9 p.m. and P-Funk North hitting the stage at 10 p.m. The event is 21 and older, only, and there is a $5 cover charge per person at the door. Additionally, P-Funk North’s performance will be recorded for a DVD to be released later this year and copies of ‘Buds Won’t Break Your Heart’ will be available for purchase at the show as well as online at iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.
