Belmar Beach Boasts ‘Perfect Conditions’ for Return of State Surfing Championships

BELMAR, NJ — Conditions couldn’t have been better for the final day of the 2017 New Jersey State Surfing Championships in Belmar.

Offshore winds produced plenty of waves on May 6 for both professional and amateur surfers who competed in the weekend event, which returned to Belmar’s 16th Avenue beach for the first time in 25 years.

“It was a great weekend filled with plenty of swell and the conditions really came together for finals day,” said Chris D’Antuono of Lake Como, who finished first in the master’s open division of the amateur competition. “It was a perfect way to bring this event back to Belmar.”

D’Antuono was among some 100 surfers who competed in the event, whose return was spearheaded by Don Tarrant, owner of Eastern Lines. While the Ocean Avenue surf shop served as event headquarters, vendors were situated on the sand and along the boardwalk, including local sponsors Playa Bowls, Fins Tropical Cuisine, Integrative Wellness Group and Coffee Surf Co., as well as a variety of clothing makers and others. Hand-crafted trophies were created by local artists Corey Hudson Art Works and Carvinarts.com by Randy Jackson.

Here are the winners in each division:

Pro Open: Zach Humphreys, first place; Sam Hammer, second place; Rob Kelly, third place; and Kyle Tester, fourth place.

Amateur Boys: Evan Couval, first place; Cole Deveney, second place; Zach Mansfield, third place; and William Grossarth, fourth place.

Amateur Junior Men: Jake DeMatteo, first place; Logan Kamen, second place; Keaton Fortney, third place; and Curran Iglay, fourth place.

Amateur Junior Women: Grace Lehman, first place; Morgan Iglay, second place; Emily Grossarth, third place; and Audrey Iglay, fourth place.

Amateur Men: Cooper Fortney, first place; and Justin Perry, second place.

Amateur Master’s Open: Chris D’Antuono, first place; Chris Sibilia, second place; Steve Swenson, third place; and Brian Stephens, fourth place.

Amateur Legends: Jack Murphy, first place; Dean Schoonover, second place; Chris Divito, third place; and Gary Finnegan Sr., fourth place.

Amateur Longboard: James Contreas, first place; Cole Deveney, second place; Paul Kelly, third place; and Keaton Fortney, fourth place.

Power Outage Darkens Warren in Heat Wave
