BELMAR, NJ — Conditions couldn’t have been better for the final day of the 2017 New Jersey State Surfing Championships in Belmar.

Offshore winds produced plenty of waves on May 6 for both professional and amateur surfers who competed in the weekend event, which returned to Belmar’s 16th Avenue beach for the first time in 25 years.

“It was a great weekend filled with plenty of swell and the conditions really came together for finals day,” said Chris D’Antuono of Lake Como, who finished first in the master’s open division of the amateur competition. “It was a perfect way to bring this event back to Belmar.”

D’Antuono was among some 100 surfers who competed in the event, whose return was spearheaded by Don Tarrant, owner of Eastern Lines. While the Ocean Avenue surf shop served as event headquarters, vendors were situated on the sand and along the boardwalk, including local sponsors Playa Bowls, Fins Tropical Cuisine, Integrative Wellness Group and Coffee Surf Co., as well as a variety of clothing makers and others. Hand-crafted trophies were created by local artists Corey Hudson Art Works and Carvinarts.com by Randy Jackson.
