SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Holy Savior Academy (HSA) of South Plainfield will join with schools throughout the country on Sunday, Jan. 27 to kickoff the official start of Catholic Schools Weeks 2019.
According to Carol Woodburn, principal of the preK-3 through eighth grade Middlebrook Deanery Catholic School, the focus of the week long celebration, held annually during the last year of January, is to shine a light on Catholic education. This year’s theme is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed!’
“This theme focuses on key elements of Catholic education: faith development, academic excellence, and dedication to service; these are all core values that can be found at Holy Savior Academy,” said Woodburn.
Holy Savior will begin its celebration of Catholic Schools Week at the 11:30 a.m. mass on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Sacred Heart Church and, immediately after and until 2:30 p.m., will hold an Open House at the school. Light refreshments will be served and the parents and visitors will have the opportunity to view Holy Savior Academy’s classrooms, including the science lab and Maker Space. New registrations will be also be accepted at this time.
“Come and meet our amazing faculty, our enthusiastic students, and our wonderful parents, tour our classrooms and labs, and view the outstanding work of our students,” said Woodburn.
Additionally, throughout the weeklong celebration, various activities tying into the ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed’ theme will take place.
On Monday, Jan. 28, the theme is ‘Celebrate Our HSA School Family.’ Students will sing the school’s new song and those in pre-K through 7th grade will ‘Step Up’ to the next grade level for several periods. There will also be a Candy Bar Buddy Bingo event in the afternoon. On Tuesday, Jan. 29, the school will ‘Celebrate HSA Students’ with a dress down day in which students will wear spiritwear or school colors. The winner of Holy Savior’s ‘Name the Mascot’ contest, which kicked off earlier this month, will also be announced and students will receive a special treat at lunch. Additionally, the day will feature the annual Eighth Grade vs. Faculty Volleyball Game at 1 p.m.
HSA will ‘Celebrate its Families’ on Jan. 30, kicking off its ‘Welcome Wednesday’ initiative. Throughout the day, current parents will be able to come in and visit their child’s classes. Moving forward, every Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. the school will welcome perspective parents to visit the classrooms.
Additionally, on Thursday, Jan. 31 HSA will ‘Celebrate Vocations/Services.’ Students will write ‘thank yous’ to Deanery Priests, Board of Limited Jurisdiction Board Members and PTO thanking them for all they do for HSA. Thursday will also be ‘Crazy Hair/Hat Day’ and there will be several grade-appropriate assemblies throughout the day, including Disney Yoga for pre-K through second grade; a Traveling Trunk History Show sponsored by the Middlesex County Office of Ats and History; for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders; and a special Career Workshop for students in sixth through eighth grade.
Catholic Schools Week 2019 will wrap up at Holy Savior on Friday, Feb. 1 beginning with Mass at Sacred Heart. The school will then ‘Celebrate HSA Faculty’ with an appreciation brunch during which time the eighth graders will become the teachers in the classroom. The weeklong celebration will conclude with an 11 a.m. Honor Roll Assembly.
