The Historical Society of Plainfield will host a lecture entitled “Remembering The Ladies: From Patriots in Petticoats to Presidential Candidates” on Sunday, March 26, 2017, starting at 2:00 PM at the Drake House Museum.   The lecture and book signing will be given by Carol Simon Levin, author and story teller.

Carol Simon Levine will be portraying Abigail Adams.  Mrs. Adams famously wrote to her husband, John, asking the Continental Congress to “remember the ladies” when drafting new laws for the new nation.  He wrote back that she was “so saucy,” and he and the rest of the Congress ignored her pleas completely.  First lady Adams visited Plainfield in 1800, when she visited the troops at the Union Camp, and her spirit will be making a return visit to Plainfield.

“Abigail” then looks forward in time to tell stories of some of the courageous and tenacious women of all colors and creeds who fought to enhance women’s political participation – from Dolly Madison to the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, and the pioneering female activists and politicians who have worked to extend women’s economic, social, and political rights.

Carol Simon Levin is a Youth Services Librarian based in Bridgewater, NJ.  In 2016, she wrote a book, “Remembering The Ladies: From Patriots in Petticoats to Presidential Candidates,” about amazing American women, which was illustrated by 35 artists.  It is an interactive book about lost stories of fascinating and forgotten women in American history.

Ms. Simon Levin says: “This book invites readers to literally color in the remarkable contributions of these courageous and tenacious women — founding mothers whose efforts aided the American Revolution, generations of abolitionists, suffragists, feminists, labor and civil rights leaders who fought for the vote and other rights for women, and women who sought and sometimes achieved elective and appointed office.”

In addition to a coloring page, each entry includes a short biography, a fascinating fact and a quote by the woman.  It includes suggestions for further reading for kids, teens, and adults and a note where a museum dedicated to her can be found (if one exists).

This program is made possible by the Historical Society of Plainfield/Drake House Museum.  Seating is limited and is on a first-come first-serve basis. Light refreshments will be served.  Members: free and non-members: donations are always appreciated.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF PLAINFIELD

It was at the Drake House that George Washington consulted with his officers during and after the Battle of Short Hills fought over the entire Plainfield area on June 25-27, 1777. On permanent display at the Drake House Museum are three Colonial era rooms--the kitchen, the Queen Anne dining room, and the Washington bedroom. The parlor and the Harberger Library are interpreted as period Victorian rooms.

The Drake House Museum also displays two large paintings by noted Civil War painter Julian Scott, a Plainfield resident and a Medal of Honor recipient.  A National and New Jersey Historic Site, the Drake House Museum is an exciting link to Plainfield’s Revolutionary War history.

The Drake House Museum is located at 602 West Front Street, Plainfield, New Jersey. Donations are always appreciated.  Onsite parking is available. For directions and more information about the Drake House and the Historical Society of Plainfield, visit www.drakehouseplainfieldnj.org.
