ROSELLE PARK, NJ — A Roselle Park police officer shot himself in the head after being involved in an accident in Matawan on Sunday afternoon, according to authorities. 

While the accident was being investigated, the 39-year-old officer, whose name is being withheld, removed a gun in his possession and fired one shot killing himself on scene, said Roselle Park Police Chief Daniel J. McCaffery. “We are grieving as a department for the loss of our officer,” he said.

An investigation is being conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
