WARREN, NJ - The Watchung Hills Wolverine Junior Pee Wee team won the Central Jersey Pop Warner Conference Championship this past Sunday when they beat the West Windsor Wildcats 19 – 6.  Earlier this season, the Wildcats dealt the Wolverines their only loss of the year in week 6. The Wolverines didn’t forget the first contest and their preparation at practice paid off.  Despite the weather conditions with pouring rain the Wolverines braved the elements and showed they were determined to win the title.

As was typical this season, the Wolverines used a committee of strong running backs to attack the opposing defense. Liam Morris, Jake Zotollo, Quadir Williams and Austin Kolakowski ran hard to keep the chains moving and limited the Wildcat’s offense time on the field. The Wildcats offense found the end zone first midway through the first quarter on a long TD run, but the Wolverine’s Defense shut down the extra point attempt. The Wolverines offense responded and drove down field in the second quarter but a tough Wildcats defense stopped a 4th and goal attempt.  This turned out to be a great motivator as a fired up Wolverines defense caused a fumble at the one yard line on 3rd down.  Jake Zotollo recovered it in the end zone for a Wolverines touchdown. The extra point attempt fell short and the game went into the half tied up at 6 – 6.

The Wolverines offense would get the ball first in the second half and the offensive line took control with blocking by Alex Kruszczynski, Stevie Prisco, Evan Collazo, Ceasar Brown, Michael Carroll and Connor Comitini. The O-Line gave the Wolverines running game the room to move.  They started strong with an outside run by Zotollo for 20 yards down the visitor sideline.  QB Aidan Grochowski broke a couple tackles to dart down the same sideline on the next play.  The Wildcats defense fought back hard and would stop the Wolverines drive. On the next possession, the Wolverines defense stopped the Wildcats offense again with plays by Trotter Temple, Winston Su, Logan Dickerson, Kaisan Edmonds and CB Danny Attanasio.

The Wolverines offense would get the ball back later in the 3rd quarter and the offense moved the ball down to the 8-yard line as the quarter ended. Early in the 4th quarter the Wolverines offense would add the go ahead touchdown, when Liam Morris took an inside trap play 8 yards into the end zone to put the Wolverines up. Morris repeated his play on the extra point and put the Wolverines ahead in the fourth quarter 13 – 6.  Despite pouring rain, it seemed to have no effect on the Wolverines spirit. The defense continuously made big plays and the fourth quarter was no different.

One the next possession for the Wildcats, the Wolverines defense caused another fumble gobbled up by Damien Moccia. This was the spark the Wolverines offense needed. After a few unfortunate penalties the Wolverines offense needed a big play.  QB Aidan Grochowski dropped back to pass and connected with his Tight end Ian Hulbert for 20 yards.  Hulbert made an amazing catch in traffic, broke several tackles and took the ball another 20 yards to the one yard line. Grochowski took a QB sneak up the middle on the next play and drove the ball in to put the Wolverines up 19 – 6. The extra point attempt was no good. The Wildcats tried to throw their way back into the game but the Wolverines defense would not let up.  CB Logan Weiss would add another takeaway with an interception to end the Wild Cats final drive.  Time expired and the Wolverines captured the 2019 Central Jersey Junior Pee Wee Division title in their first season joining the conference.
