WARREN, NJ - Graduation at Watchung Hills will remain mostly the same, at least for the Class of 2020. A buzz among some parents of seniors around the possibility of a change to one color for graduation caps and gowns has been discussed on social media over the last few weeks. All around a discussion around the possibility of a change to one color.
Traditionally, the girls wear white and the boys wear gold but the school has been talking about a shift to a gender neutral color.
At the last meeting of the Board of Education, during committee reports, board member Bob Morrison explained that the shift would not occur this year. Class of 2020 graduation pictures were taken over the summer and caps and gowns were ordered by parents in the fall, white for girls and gold for boys. The vendor has agreed that the Class of 2020 will be able to change their color between gold and white if desired. More information will be provided to senior parents by the school.
Beginning next year with the Class of 2021, all graduates will wear a yet to be designed gown, possibly incorporating both colors, Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Jewett said.
