NORTH SALEM, N.Y.-Students at Pequenakonck Elementary School were awarded for their kindness earlier this month through the Ben’s Bells program.

Ben’s Bells is an organization with a mission to inspire, educate and motivate people to realize the impact of intentional kindness and to empower individuals to act according to that awareness, thereby strengthening themselves and their relationships with the community.

The organization was started in Tucson, Ariz., in 2003 when founder Jeanette Mare lost her 3-year-old suddenly to croup. Mare found solace working with clay after her son’s untimely death and created the concept of a string of clay beads with its signature bells to be randomly hung in places throughout the community for people to take and continue to spread kindness to others. The bells contain an inscription reading, “You found a Ben’s Bell. Take it home, hang it and remember to spread kindness throughout the world.”

In 2014, PQ Elementary became involved with the organization, empowering students to strengthen the culture of kindness at their school.
