NORTH SALEM, N.Y.--Nearly all of the Croton Falls Volunteer Fire Department’s 140 members and an additional 250 of their closest friends and family enjoyed an evening of nostalgia and fun in celebration of the department’s 125th anniversary.

Mark Morin, chairman of the board of commissioners, said the event officialy sold out the morning of. He and other officials said it was a case of “the more the merrier.”
The party was held at Old Salem Farm in North Salem on  Saturday, Oct. 14. Ted Daros, the department’s president, said other local firehouses covered for the department so its members could truly have an evening “off.”

Under the amber glow of dozens of giant string lights, Andrea & the Armenian Rug Riders rocked the house. Firefighters and company danced on a floor that was set up in one of the venue’s three indoor areas. Dinner tables and the buffet flanked the stage. The rustic-chic atmosphere was warm and inviting.

“The venue was great and everybody loved it,” Daros said. “The committee [that organized the event] did a great job.”

Aversano’s Restaurant & Pizza provided appetizers for the cocktail hour and Bonni Manning Catering based in Sherman, Conn., catered the buffet dinner, but the show was stolen by a chocolate chocolate-mousse cake modeled after the department’s now retired 1939 Ward LaFrance pumper engine. Refurbished in 2010, the engine was also on display. Blown up photographs of the department’s notable moments in history decorated the walls.

“This event was to honor members past and present,” Daros said. “I think we accomplished that.”

Exploring Health and Wellness

I’ve decided to devote a lot of time this summer to exploring health and wellness. Being a person who has no preoccupation with age but still has a young child, this is probably not a bad idea. However, full disclosure: we have launched a new healthy lifestyle magazine here at Halston Media, so my pursuit isn’t always just for me. No complaints, though, because I am just embarking on ...
